Southpaw
gene symbol: spaw. This zebrafish protein, identified by Long et al (2003), is an ortholog of the murine secreted protein NODAL. southpaw is required for visceral and diencephalic left-right asymmetry. Montague et al (2018) have reported that left-right patterning in zebrafish and mouse mediated by NODAL are conserved. Southpaw forms heterodimers with Vg-1 [vegetalising factor-1]; DAND5 [DAN domain family member 5] and lefty-1 [left-right determination factor 1] restrict Southpaw expression to the left side and control the timing and speed of Spaw propagation.
