[lactokinin]
this is a term for small bioactive peptides that block the activity of angiotensin-1 converting enzyme (CD143) and therefore have hypotensive activity. Lactokinins are derived from milk and whey proteins by hydrolysis (FitzGerald and Meisel, 1999; FitzGerald et al, 2004) and represent internal fragments of some proteins (see also: cryptides). Strictly speaking, the term lactokinins applies to bioactive fragments derived from alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin. Those inhibitors derived from caseins are often being referred to as casokinins. For convenience, this entry lists all peptide fragments irrespective of their origin.
