The c-kit oncogene encodes a transmembrane receptor with intrinsic tyrosine-specific protein kinase activity in its intracellular domain (Geissler et al, 1988). It is the cellular homolog of the viral v-kit oncogene of HZ4-FSV (Hardy-Zuckerman 4 feline sarcoma virus). In the nomenclature of CD antigens the kit receptor has been given the designation CD117. The ligand for the kit receptor is SCF (stem cell factor).
