These specialized avian neurons receive the terminals of centrifugal fibers emanating from the isthmo-optic nucleus. In old anatomical references the cells have been described as spongioblast (multipolar cells projecting into the inner plexiform layer), association spongioblasts, association amacrine cells (for original references see: Uchiyama and Stell, 2005). Uchiyama and Stell (2005) have pointed out that these cells resemble amacrine cells but appear to be classical polarized, monoaxonal neurons that lack the dendritic interactions typical of amacrine cells
