Amacrine cells, frequently referred to as amacrines, are synaptically active interneurons connecting to other amacrine cells, bipolar cells, and ganglion cells to process visual information in the inner retina. These cells are found in the inner layer of the vertebrate retina and, in terms of morphology, size, and distribution, constitute the most diverse group of cells in the inner plexiform layer vertebrate retina. Owing to their predominant location in the plexiform layer of the retina, in many publications amacrine cells are simply referred to as interplexiform cells
