abbr. IEL. abbr. also IE-CTLs [intraepithelial cytotoxic T-lymphocytes]. These cells are gut-associated cells intraepithelial T-cells. The cells are interspersed in the layer of epithelial cells that form the epithelial layer facing the lumen of the alimentary tract and constitute the largest population in the peripheral T-cell pool. Intraepithelial lymphocytes cells undergo extrathymic development . So-called cryptopatches in the intestinal crypt lamina propria of mice have been identified as sites rich in T-cell precursors that can give rise to this cell type (Ishikawa et al, 2007).
