Wijsman et al (1993) have described the in situ end-labeling (ISEL) procedure as a staining method for formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections to detect DNA fragmentation as seen in cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis (see also: Hewitson et al, 2000; Zhang and Galileo, 1997). The method also detects cells in which DNA fragmentation has not yet progressed to complete nuclear fragmentation. The technique involves end-labeling of DNA ends (Wood).
