Granulophysin has been identified as a platelet dense granule membrane protein, using monoclonal antibodies D545 and D503 raised against purified human platelet dense granule membranes. They have shown that the protein is absent in a patient with the Hermansly-Pudlak syndrome (Gerrard et al, 1991).
Nishibori et al (1993) have reported that granulophysin is expressed on the surface of platelets and is absent from platelets of patients with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome, a condition characterized by dense granule and lysosomal deficiencies and the accumulation of ceroid-like material in reticuloendothelial cells.
