The term reticuloendothelial cells essentially is a collective term for cells of the immune system and primarily comprises macrophages and monocytes or their tissue-resident forms (e. g., histiocytes). Thus, the broad designation of reticuloendothelial cells may include all phagocytic cells (phagocytes) that deal with the foreign antigens of any kind of foreign organisms invading the host with the exception of circulating leukocytes.
