often spelled Gonadotrophins. This collective term refers to a group of hormones that act on the gonads. It usually refers to LH [Luteinizing hormone], FSH [Follicle-stimulating hormone], and hCG [human chorionic gonadotropin], which act in concert in the regulation of female reproductive system. The release of these hormones is effected by various releasing hormones and their receptors. These hormones consist of different subunits, a common alpha subunit and a unique beta subunit. Therefore, their expression requires transcriptional control to ensure their coordinate production (for overview see: Kageyama , 2013; Bousfield and Dias, 2011).
