Fragmentin has been purified by Shi et al (1992) from a rat natural killer large granular lymphocyte leukemia as a 32 kDa granule protein that induces rapid DNA fragmentation and cell death by apoptosis. Fragmentin is highly homologous to the NK-cell and T-cell granule serine proteases RNK protease 1 and mouse granzyme B. and probably acts as the molecular mediator of NK-cell mediated DNA fragmentation and apoptosis.
