abbr. FnE, FgnE; also: fibrinogen E fragment. This fragment of 50 kDa contains the central domain of human fibrinogen (consisting of the N-terminal regions of the alpha, beta and gamma chains held together by disulfide bonds) and is formed when plasmin cleaves the carboxyl termini of the paired alpha, beta, and gamma chains of fibrinogen. The amino termini of the two alpha fragments are retained in fibrinogen fragment E but are missing in the (related) fibrin fragment E. Fibrinogen fragment E can be a source of Alphastatin and Fibrinogen-beta(43-63).
