[epitheliocyte]
This term is used frequently to refer to cells with the morphology of epithelial cells (often non-English literature with English abstract) (for overview see also: Willmer, 1970). Epitheliocytes, for example, are said to be converted into elongated cells resembling fibroblasts under the influence of scatter factor (HGF), a phenomenon known as epithelio-mesenchymal transformation (Vasiliev, 2008).
The term is used also in the context of thymus biology for the cells that provide a microenvironment essential for the development of thymocytes (see: thymus epithelial reticular cells, thymic epithelial cells).
