[Epithelial rests of Malassez cells] abbr. sometimes ERM cells. This cell type constitutes specialized epithelial cells found in the periodontal ligament (see also: Periodontal ligament cells) and are thought to play a role in the homeostasis of the periodontium (for overview see: Xiong J et al, 2013; Keinan and Cohen, 2013; Yang Z et al, 2015). It has been proposed that epithelial cell rests of Malassez have a functional role in cementum or enamel repair/regeneration (Foster et al, 2007; Hasegawa et al, 2003; Shinmura et al, 2008). EMT [epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation] has been demonstrated to be one mechanism by which these cells generate cementum (Sonoyama et al, 2007; Xiong et al, 2012).
