This term refers to non-proliferative, undifferentiated cells derived from self-renewing intestinal stem cells (Micchelli and Perrimon, 2006; Ohlstein and Spradling, 2006) in the Drosophila melanogaster posterior midgut (considered the functional equivalent of the human small intestine (Casali and Batlle, 2009). Enteroblasts differentiate into mature epithelial enterocytes or secretory enteroendocrine cells (Jiang and Edgar, 2011).
