Enkephalinase is a membrane-bound peptidase hydrolyzing the Gly3-Phe4 amide bond of enkephalins initially characterized in brain. This endopeptidase has been isolated from a membrane fraction of homogenized human kidney as kidney enkephalinase (Gafford et al, 1983) and is identical with renal brush-border neutral proteinase purified from a rat kidney microsomal fraction (Malfroy and Schwartz, 1984). The enzyme cleaves peptides at the amino side of hydrophobic residues, including enkephalins and is identical with the CD antigen CD10 (Connelly et al, 1985).
