[endometrial cell, endometrial cell-derived]
Endometrial cells form the mucous membrane that lines the normal endometrium of the uterus. Decidual cells form the mucous membrane that lines the endometrium of the uterus after fertilization has taken place (Abrahamsohn and Zorn, 1993; Kearns and Lala, 1983). The term decidualized endometrial cells is also used. Decidualization can be initiated by the implantation of a blastocyste or by artificial stimuli in hormone-primed animals. Artificially induced decidual tissue is being referred to as deciduoma. Decidual cells differentiate from stromal fibroblasts in response to embryonic stimuli and constitute the major cell type of the gestational endometrium.
