Known also as NESP (Novel erythropoiesis stimulating protein) and by its trade name Aranesp (Amgen Inc, Thousand Oaks, USA). Darbepoetin alfa is a genetically engineered form of human erythropoietin. Site-directed mutagenesis was used to introduce 8 more sialic acid side chains than found in recombinant human erythropoietin. The additional sialic acid content results in an approximately 3-fold greater half-life relative to recombinant human erythropoietin.
