Daintain (16.6 kDa; 146 amino acids; acetylated N-terminus) has been isolated from porcine intestine as an intestinal factor effecting insulin release (Chen et al, 1997). The factor is identical with AIF-1 [allograft inflammatory factor-1].
The factor is found in microglial cells in the central nervous system and in dendritic cells and macrophages in several organs. Macrophages expressing high levels of this factor are observed in insulitis affecting the pancreatic islets of prediabetic BB rats. Intravenous injection of this factor (75 pmol/kg) into mice
