cuproptosis

[Copper-induced cell death] this term - also sometimes copper death - refers to a mode of programmed cell death dependent on mitochondrial respiration. Mechanistically, it is different from other cell death pathways such as apoptosis, necrosis, oncosis, pyroptosis, autophagy, and ferroptosis. The process is regulated by mitochondrial protein lipoylation mediated by ferredoxin-1 and involves direct binding of copper to lipoylated components of the citric acid cycle. This results in lipoylated protein aggregation and subsequent iron-sulfur cluster protein loss, which leads to proteotoxic stress and ultimately cell death.
