[Cytokine response modifier D] This gene (also designated K2R; cowpox virus K2R protein) is encoded in the genome of Cowpox virus Brighton red strain (CPV) [cowpox virus cytokine response modifier D]. CrmD encodes a protein of 320 amino acids that is related to crmB and crmC (Loparev et al, 1998). The gene is found also in the genome of ectromelia virus (Ectromelia virus K2R protein; Mousepox virus K2R protein). CrmD is a secreted protein produced in the early stage of virus replication. It has the ability to bind TNF-alpha and LT-alpha and thus functions as a virally encoded receptor for these cytokines
