[Cytokine response modifier B] This gene is encoded in the inverted terminal repeats of the DNA of the Brighton Red strain of cowpox virus. The vaccinia virus gene equivalent to crmB is called B28R/C22L. The cowpox gene is called h4r (Hu et al, 1994). Equivalent crmB genes are present also in variola virus (VARV), monkeypox virus (MPXV) (Gileva et al, 2005). The protein has been shown to contain a SECRET domain that bestows the ability to bind various chemokines (Alejo et al, 2006).
The crmB gene is transcribed from an early promoter and produces a secreted soluble protein with an apparent molecular mass of 48 kDa. The sequence of the N-terminal 176 amino acids of crmB closely resembles the ligand-binding domains of the type 2 (75 kDa)
