also: kodocytes. A term describing specific shape forms of erythrocytes that deviate from standard forms (see also: discocytes). A synonymous term is target cells. The term leptocytes may also be used to describe these cells.
Bunyaratvej et al (1985) have reported reduced numbers of normally shaped erythrocytes (see: discocytes) in patients with beta-thalassemia/HbE disease, which is reduced further by splenectomy, larger splenic sizes, and increasing anemia. The numbers of codocytes are singularly associated with splenectomy.
