This zebrafish gene, named for the bell-shaped heart of mutant animals, has been identified by Stainier et al (1995). Cloche mutants have defects in both vasculogenesis and hematopoiesis. Cloche affects both the endothelial cell and hematopoietic cell lineages at a very early stage, which may be at the level of the hemangioblast. The endocardium, the endothelial lining of the heart, is missing in mutant embryos, whereas other endothelial cells are present. The number of blood cells is greatly reduced also in cloche mutants and the hematopoietic tissues show no expression of GATA-1 or GATA-2, two key hematopoietic transcription factors
