[choanocyte]
This cell type is found in sponges (phylum Porifera). Choanocytes are food-entrapping flagellated filter cells that are constantly renewed (De Goeij et al, 2009). Under certain circumstances, despite being fully differentiated, these cells can transform into stem cells known as archaeocytes in a process involving epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation, mesenchymal-to-epithelial transformation, and transdifferentiation (Borisenko et al, 2015; for review see also: Funayama, 2013).
