cgMolluscidin is a highly basic antimicrobial peptide of 55 amino acids purified from gill extracts of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The peptide has no homology with any known peptides. cgMolluscidin is a defense peptide that shows potent antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive bacteria, including Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, and Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The peptide is not active against Candida albicans. It is without hemolytic activity for human erythrocytes. Expression of cgMolluscidin mRNA is up-regulated significantly after infection with Vibrio sp.
