These cells make up the cardiac conduction system, a specialized tissue coordinating and guaranteeing the rhythmic contractions of the heart through precisely timed electrical impulses (Gourdie et al, 1999; Myers and Fishman, 2003). Conduction cells are derived from precursor cells in the heart and share a common lineage with working cardiomyocytes (Cheng et al, 1999; Gourdie et al, 1995).
