bortezomib

This antineoplastic compound, known also as Velcade, is a dipeptide boronic acid formerly known as PS-341, LDP-341 and MLM341 (Adams and Kauffman, 2004). Bortezomib is a potent selective proteasome inhibitor of proteasome. Disruption of proteasome-mediated proteolysis of cellular proteins interferes with important cellular signaling and gene expression pathways and ultimately causes cell cycle arrest and cell death by apoptosis (Richardson et al, 2006; Schenkein, 2005).

The agent has been approved for the treatment of relapsed myeloma (San Miguel et al, 2006; Jackson et al, 2005) and may be suitable for treatment of other neoplastic cell types.
