[Bone lining cell]
Bone lining cells (abbr. BLCs) are post-mitotic flat osteoblast lineage cells lining the bone surface (Matic et al, 2016) and thought to be involved in the preparation of bone surfaces before the initiation of bone formation (Everts et al, 2002).
Bone lining cells are cells with flat or slightly ovoid nuclei that cover non-remodeling (inactive) bone surfaces, particularly in the adult skeleton, and connect to other bone lining cells via gap junctions. They also send cell processes into surface canaliculi. These cells can be induced to proliferate and differentiate into osteogenic cells (osteoblasts) and may represent a source of determined osteogenic precursors.
