[antibacterial factor-1] abf-1 and also abf-2 [antibacterial factor-2] have been identified in Caenorhabditis elegans (Kato et al, 2002). They are encoded by a polycistronic precursor RNA and the two genes appear to be organized in an operon. The two genes encode antibacterial factors (66 amino acids each) resembling ASABF [Ascaris suum antibacterial factor].
Recombinant abf-2 has been shown to exhibit potent microbicidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, and yeasts and is thought to contribute to surface defence in the pharynx. Alegado and Tan (2008) have reported that Salmonella infection leads to induction of abf-2
