[zona pellucida domain] This domain of approximately 260 residues is found in many eukaryotic extracellular proteins and was observed first in some proteins isolated from the zona pellucida, a specialized extracellular matrix surrounding oocytes from virtually all organisms that has a structural function and plays essential roles in oogenesis, fertilization, and early development. The ZP domain was first noted in the sperm receptor proteins of the zonal pellucida. It shows some similarity to a TGF-beta receptor type III betaglycan) (Bork and Sander, 1992).
