ZENK

ZENK is an acronym coined by Mello et al (1992). It stands for zif268, egr-1, NGFI-A, and Krox-24, four names for four early response genes that are identical. ZENK is considered the avian homolog of these genes and has been shown to be one of the genes the expression of which is upregulated in the forebrain region believed to participate in auditory processing, following presentation of tape-recorded songs to canaries (Serinus canaria) and zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).
