[X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis] The human cDNA for this protein has been isolated by Liston et al (1996). The protein has been renamed BIRC4 [baculoviral IAP repeat-containing protein-4]. See: IAP [inhibitor of apoptosis]. The murine homolog of XIAP (94 % identical to human XIAP) is known as MIAP [mouse inhibitor of apoptosis protein].
The human XIAP gene maps to chromosome Xq25 (Rajcan-Separovic et al, 1996). XIAP mRNA appears to be expressed in all fetal and adult tissues except peripheral blood leukocytes.
