also: WsRC-Ws/Ws rats. These rats carry a small 12 base deletion in the tyrosine kinase domain of the c-kit gene (Ws (white spotting) locus), the receptor for SCF (Niwa et al, 1991, Tsujimura et al, 1991). Homozygous animals are anemic and deficient in mast cells. The anemia and mast cell deficiency of these animals is attributed to a defect of precursors of erythrocytes and mast cells. The magnitude of the anemia decreases and that of the mast cell deficiency increases in adult Ws/Ws rats. These rats, similar to comparable mouse strains, have been used in the studies of the differentiation
