[Wright blood group antigens]
The Wright blood group antigen expressed on erythrocytes consists of two variants. Wr(a) is a low-incidence antigen. Wr(b) is a high incidence antigen (Holman et al, 1953. Both antigens are encoded by the same gene (Adams et al, 1971; Wren and Issitt, 1988).
Bruce et al (1995) have reported that the Wright blood group antigen is encoded by the band 3 protein and that changes in the blood group Wright antigens are associated with a mutation at amino acid 658 in human erythrocyte band 3 protein at a site of interaction between band 3 and glycophorin A.
