[Wnt family member 8c; wingless-type MMTV integration site family member 8c] Wnt-8c is a member of the Wnt family of proteins identified in Hensens's node during chick embryogenesis (Hume and Dodd, 1993). Wnt-8c is expressed prior to gastrulation in the posterior marginal zone, the primitive streak and Hensen's node. Injection of Wnt-8c mRNA into Xenopus laevis embryos causes axis duplication and dorsalization of mesodermal tissues. During neurulation, Wnt-8c is expressed transiently in a restricted domain of the prospective hindbrain neurectoderm that will give rise to rhombomere 4 and thus may be involved also in the regulation of hindbrain patterning.
Marvin et al (2001) have shown that ectopic expression of Wnt-8c can inhibit cardiac development and promote
