Walleye dermal sarcoma virus is a retrovirus associated with seasonally regressing benign tumours in walleye fish (Stizostedion vitreum) (Martineau et al, 1990, 1992; Poulet et al, 1995). Overexpression of the orfC protein (120 amino acids) causes perinuclear clustering of mitochondria, dissipation of the mitochondrial transmembrane potential. and partial release of cytochrome C. Cells that express orfC protein show features of cell death by apoptosis such as phosphatidylserine exposure and chromatin condensation (Nudson et al, 1998). The orfC protein is expressed at high levels in regressing tumours, and tumour regression is often associated with apoptosis.
