The tetrapeptide sequence WEHD (Trp-Glu-His-Asp) has been found to be the optimal tetrapeptide recognition sequence for one of the caspases, IL1-beta Convertase (Rano et al, 1997). Some other caspases (caspase-4, caspase-5) also prefer this tetrapeptide sequence (Garcia-Calvo et al, 1998; Rano et al, 1997). Hibino et al (2010) have reported that purified active caspase-14 from human cornified cells has the highest activity on WEHD-AFC (conjugated to 7-amino-4-trifluoromethylcoumarin). An enzyme that recognizes the WEHD sequence is referred to sometimes also as WEHDase and would thus be caspase-1, caspase-4,
