Vaspin
[Visceral adipose-specific serpin] This protein is being referred to also as Visceral adipose tissue-derived serine protease inhibitor or SERPINA12 [serpin peptidase inhibitor clade A member 12] and has been identified independently as gene OL-64.
Rat (392 amino acids), mouse (394 amino acids), and human (395 amino acids) vaspin exhibit approximately 40 % homology with alpha-1-antitrypsin (Hida et al, 2005). Vaspin is expressed mainly in adipocytes (Hida et al, 2005) but expression has been observed also in skin keratinocytes (Saalbach et al, 2012).
