[virus-inhibitory peptide] This peptide has been isolated by Münch et al (2007) from human hemofiltrate fractions. The peptide, LEAIPMSIPPEVKFNKPFVF, corresponds to residues 353-372 of human alpha-1-antitrypsin (abbr. alpha-1-antitrypsin(353-372), SERPINA1(353-372)), the most abundant circulating serine protease inhibitor (Travis and Salvesen, 1983). VIRIP inhibits infection and transmission of a wide variety of HIV1 strains, including strains that are resistant to antiretroviral drugs and acts by blocking HIV1 entry by interacting with the gp41 fusion peptide.
