[uncoordinated locomotion-5] This Caenorhabditis elegans gene has been implicated in guidance of circumferential migrations of pioneer axons and mesodermal cells on the nematode body wall. The UNC5 gene of C. elegans encodes a unique receptor of the immunoglobulin superfamily. UNC5 is expressed on motile cells and pioneer axons and orients cell movements away from UNC6 sources. The mammalian counterparts of UNC5 (see: UNC5H) have been shown to act as receptors for netrin-1 and to function as so-called dependence receptors that trigger apoptosis in the absence of their ligand.
