[cytomegalovirus UL78] This protein is encoded by an open reading frame in the genome of human cytomegalovirus. The UL78 gene encodes a G-protein-coupled receptor with an unknown ligand (Rosenkilde et al, 2001, 2008). For the murine counterpart see: M78.
UL78 shares only very limited homology with endogenous chemokine receptors of the host (Vischer et al, 2006) and has been shown to be dispensable for viral replication (Michel et al, 2005). O'Connor and Shenk (2012) have reported that UL78 is required for timely cell entry in epithelial cells (a cell type important for in vivo viral replication and spread), but not fibroblasts.
