[UBX domains, ubiquitin regulatory X domains]
[ubiquitin regulatory X domain] This domain of approximately 80 amino acids is found in the C-terminus of a variety of eukaryotic proteins. Buchberger et al (2001, 2002) have suggested a role for this domain in processes involving ubiquitin and the degradation of proteins. Proteins containing an UBX domain are involved in the degradation of misfolded proteins, recruiting substrates to the molecular chaperone protein VCP (p97/VCP), a highly conserved AAA ATPase (ATPase associated with a variety of activities) that acts in complex with the proteasome (Rabouille et al, 1998; Schubert and Buchberger, 2008).
