This highly conserved protein of 76 amino acids has been found in all eukaryotic cells studied. In mammals, ubiquitin can come from four precursors, each encoded by a different gene (Wiborg et al, 1985Baker and Board, 1987). UBA52 [ubiquitin A-52 residue ribosomal protein fusion product 1] and UBA80 [Ubiquitin carboxyl extension protein 80] (referred to collectively also as UBA [ubiquitin A]) contain a single ubiquitin molecule C-terminally fused to a ribosomal protein, RPL40 and RPS27A, respectively (Baker and Board, 1991; Redman and Rechsteiner, 1989). UBB [ubiquitin B] contains 3-4 ubiquitins, and UBC [
