U83A is encoded in the genome of the leukotropic human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6A variant) [Herpesvirus-6A U83 protein], which establishes a persistent infection associated with inflammatory diseases. U83A-Npep is a spliced truncated isoform expressed early during the replicative cycle.
U83A is a viral chemokine homolog (see also: virokines) that efficiently and potently induces calcium mobilization in cells expressing the human chemokine receptors CCR1, CCR4, CCR6, or CCR8. U83A also induces chemotaxis of leukemic cells with a Th phenotype that express
