The designation tryptase-epsilon (Wong et al, 2001) refers to a secreted enzyme identified originally by sequence similarity with tryptase-beta-1. The human enzyme has different substrate specificity, is expressed preferentially by epithelial cells, and is not detected in HMC-1 mast cells and mast cell-enriched tissues.
On the other hand, Kempuraj et al (2018) have referred to the mouse protein as tryptase/BSSP-4. They reported that 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium, a metabolite of the parkinsonian neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), induces the release of tryptase/BSSP-4 from mouse mast cells, and that tryptase/BSSP-4 induces chemokine
