This rat protein isolated from rat mast cells (Kido et al, 1998) is a protease that strongly inhibits blood coagulation Factor Xa. It also inhibits porcine pancreatic trypsin and chymase, but not papain, alpha-thrombin, or porcine pancreatic elastase. The inhibitor is most likely the rat counterpart of Bikunin (Itoh et al, 1994; Ide et al, 1999). Mast cells appear to contain only bikunin protein but not mRNA. The author have suggested that mast cells may not produce bikunin themselves but that it is trapped by these cells from serum of circulating blood.
