Termicin (ACNFQSCWATCQAQHSIYFRRAFCDRSQCKCVFVRGamide) is an antifungal peptide isolated from the fungus-growing termite Pseudacanthotermes spiniger (heterometabole insect, Isoptera) (Lamberty et al, 2001). Termicin does not show any obvious sequence similarity to other peptides. It consists of 36 amino acids with six cysteines arranged in a disulfide array similar to that of insect defensins. Termicin shares more structural similarities with the antibacterial insect defensins and with MGD-1, a mussel defensin, than with the insect antifungal defensins such as drosomycin and heliomicin (Da Silva et al, 2003).
