(approved gene symbol) [tripartite motif-containing protein 68] In databanks the protein is also being referred to as RNF137 [RING finger protein 137]. The cDNA for this protein, termed SS-56, a member of a large family of proteins containing a tripartite motif, has been identified by Billaut-Mulot et al (2001) in a screen for genes downregulated by Murabutide, a drug suppressing HIV-1. Billaut-Mulot et al (2001) have reported that anti-SS-56 levels are high in patients with HIV-1 infection prior to starting treatment. Most patients with Sjögren syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus have autoantibodies directed against this protein.
