[tumor protein p53 regulated apoptosis inducing protein 1; p53-regulated apoptosis-inducing protein 1] abbr. also: p53AIP1. The gene encoding this protein, which localizes to mitochondria, has been identified by Oda et al (2000). Its expression is inducible by wild-type p53. Ectopic expression causes cell death by apoptosis. The protein is phosphorylated in response to severe DNA damage and induces apoptosis.
Benfodda M et al (2018) have reported that TP53AIP1 mRNA expression is strongly down-regulated throughout different phases of melanoma progression and that truncating mutations predispose to cutaneous melanoma.
